Energy is a critical issue for many Pennsylvanians today and will likely continue to be in the foreseeable future.

• Our state is heavily dependent on imported petroleum supplies, which impact our economic security and environment.
• We urgently need to develop strategies to use energy more efficiently and develop new, sustainable and renewable and alternative energy supplies.
• Energy development issues are becoming increasingly complicated.  Related impacts include feedstock availability, carbon emissions, impacts on soil, water, natural resources.
  

Penn State Extension has made renewable and alternative energy programming a priority.

Extension educators and faculty are working to:

• evaluate energy alternatives
• develop strategies for using energy more efficiently
• educate youth, citizens, farmers and policy makers about the complex issues related to alternative energy development and improving energy efficiency. 
• partnering with other Penn State researchers, energy project developers, government agencies, and communities to achieve goals in alternative energy development.
  

Investing in alternative energy strategies that are economically viable, environmentally friendly, and provide a benefit to local communities should be a critical objective of our society.
